What is hair transplantation?

Hair transplantation is the process of moving hair follicles from one part of your scalp to another. A hair transplant fills in your sparse areas using your hair, so it’s a natural-looking and highly effective way to treat hair loss.

The most common methods of hair transplantation involve removing and repositioning either a strip of healthy hairs or individual hair follicles. The transplanted hairs then take root in their new position so you can grow healthy hair there in the future.

Am I a good candidate for hair transplantation?

To have a hair transplant, you must have:

Transplantable hair

You need enough healthy “donor” hair on another part of your scalp. Usually, donor hair comes from the back of the scalp.

Ability to grow hair

In many cases of hair loss, patients can grow new hair but lack the healthy follicles to do so. So, if that’s the case, you might be a good candidate for hair transplantation.

However, if you have a disease or condition that prevents hair regrowth, the procedure generally isn’t right for you. For that reason, you’ll have tests, including a scalp biopsy and blood tests, to determine the root cause of your hair loss.

In addition, Comprehensive Dermatology recommends that patients first try non-surgical methods like topical and oral treatments before considering hair transplantation. In some cases, they may recommend platelet-rich plasma (PRP) or platelet-rich fibrin matrix (PRFM) treatment before trying a transplant.

What happens after hair transplantation?

After hair transplantation, you’ll have a bandage on the treated parts of your scalp. In about two to eight weeks, the transplanted hairs fall out, but that shedding is a normal part of the process.

Your hair may look thinner at around three months post-transplant, but it’s a temporary issue because new hair typically sprouts six to nine months after the procedure. Your new hair blends in with your surrounding hair, looking completely natural.

The Comprehensive Dermatology team usually recommends using oral and topical treatments like Rogaine® and Propecia® after your hair transplant. These treatments can help prevent future hair loss so you can enjoy long-lasting effects.

At Comprehensive Dermatology, the hair loss specialists use innovative, leading-edge techniques to create natural-looking hair transplant results. To learn more about hair transplantation, call the nearest office or request an appointment online today.
